Reflexology
Reflexology is a non-invasive, natural method that is used as part of a preventive health maintenance program. Reflexology is also frequently used in conjunction with other therapies. Reflexology improves lymphatic and vascular circulation, balances the hormonal system and is an effective remedy for disorders related to the nervous system. Reflexology is highly effective for stress and pain management. Foot reflexology may improve one’s quality of life during chronic illness. Through RAF (Reflexology Assisted Fertility), one may target fertility issues and may improve reproductive health. Vera Krijn is a master reflexologist who is trained in Eastern as well as western techniques of foot reflexology.
What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is performed by a reflexologist and is based on the principle that there are reflex points and areas on the ears, hands and feet that correspond to all parts, organs and glands of the body. Reflexology uses specific pressure-techniques that induces a profound state of relaxation which causes physiological changes in the body. Vera Krijn is a world renowned certified reflexologist who also teaches certification programs in foot reflexology and continuing education classes for doulas and holistic nurses. Reflexology is among the fastest growing complementary healthcare modalities in the world today. Reflexology is believed to work through the nervous and subtle energy systems of the body.
What can I expect to feel as a result of a reflexology session by a certified reflexologist?
Reflexology induces a deep relaxation and a general state of well-being, which is known as “homeostasis” and allows the body to release the stresses and tension of everyday life. Reflexology restores and balances the body in a natural and healthy way. A balanced body has the ability to heal on all levels: physically, mentally and spiritually. Clinical studies and anecdotal information all indicate effects that point to more balanced nervous and endocrine activity.
How does the foot relate to the body in terms of reflexology?
Although the hands and ears also contain reflexes, the feet demonstrate the relationship to the body more clearly and foot charts depict the majority of reflex points in an astoundingly logical anatomical pattern. Each foot has 7,200 nerve endings which provide direct access to the circulatory and nervous systems of the body. The feet are also furthest away from the heart, which helps circulation throughout the body. This is the reason that foot reflexology is the most effective method and why foot reflexology is most commonly used by a reflexologist when performing reflexology.
How can reflexology help with when performed by a certified reflexologist?
When performed by a certified reflexologist, reflexology treatment can be very helpful in the reduction of pain, anxiety, depression, high blood pressure, migraines, chronic headaches, fibromyalgia, constipation, nausea, fatigue, edema, premenstrual symptoms, menopausal symptoms, pre-natal symptoms, symptoms of neuropathy, intrinsic foot pain and hormonal imbalances, among others.
When performed by a certified reflexologist, reflexology treatment may be beneficial by balancing and strengthening the immune system. Reflexology aids with digestive and sleep disorders, and foot reflexology often increases energy levels. Reflexology works with all the body’s systems to improve the function of the entire system.
How might reflexology help with infertility, fertility related issues and reproductive health?
Vera Krijn is the originator of the RAF Program (Reflexology Assisted Fertility Program), which specifically targets infertility. Sponsored by national and international organizations and schools, Vera teaches and lectures the RAF program to other reflexologists, doulas and holistic nurses. Professionals trained in the RAF method may assist with restoring fertility and reproductive health. The Reflexology Assisted Fertility Program incorporates reflexology, nutrition and positive thought reinforcement.
What is the RAFTM (Reflexology Assisted Fertility) Program?
RAFTM (Reflexology Assisted Fertility) practitioners are certified reflexology who have specific post-graduate training in this method. The Reflexology Assisted Fertility Program is a low-tech alternative to ART (Assisted Reproductive Technology). The RAF Program identifies and addresses the elements that inhibit fertility and emphasizes the connection of mind, body and spirit. The RAF Program helps to break the cycle of self-limiting negative beliefs and restores faith in the ability of one’s own body. Traditional reflexology charts reflect physical reflexes. The RAF’s chart includes “emotional reflexes” representing our emotions and emotional memory. With the use of some specific techniques on these reflexes we may induce emotional release and encourage the healing of emotional memory.
Can Reflexology help with Diabetes?
Diabetes causes blood sugar levels to be higher than normal. Some of the more common consequences include poor circulation, high blood pressure, peripheral neuropathy and infection in the lower extremities. Reflexology applies calculated and specific pressure techniques and accesses 7500 nerve endings directly on each foot. To prevent serious foot problems, the feet are carefully monitored before each session for changes in temperature, texture, color and possible cuts and bruises. Reflexology can improve vascular and lymphatic circulation, which helps provide the cells of the body with needed food and oxygen and which helps regulate body temperature. Reflexology induces a profound state of relaxation, which helps to lower blood pressure and boost the immune system.
Reflexology balances the functions of the body by working directly on both the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system and produces a general feeling of well being. Reflexology is not a “cure-all,” however, reflexology is a modality that helps to reduce or relieve the symptoms of various disorders such as neuropathy, pain, migraines, hormonal imbalances, digestive problems, circulatory problems, depression and stress.
Nurture a Healthy Pregnancy and Facilitate Childbirth with Reflexology
Pregnancy is one of the most exciting and exhilarating periods in a woman’s life. Nevertheless, often it can be a time of psychological and physical stress. Reflexology is a gentle, holistic treatment, which is ideal to maintain balance and harmony during the changes of pregnancy. Many minor ailments, such as morning sickness, nausea/vomiting, fluid retention, heartburn, headaches, backache, constipation, sleeplessness, fatigue, and carpal tunnel syndrome respond well to reflexology therapy. Reflexology therapy has also been shown to help balance blood pressure. Few modalities have the simplicity and power of reflexology. The effect of a nurturing touch induces a profound state of relaxation. Reflexology provides clarity of mind, emotional balance, and physical resilience. Reflexology helps with progressive muscle relaxation to ease and comfort the associated anxiety and pain of birth. Pre-natal and post natal reflexology has been successfully practiced in Europe for more than 10 years. It is recommended that pregnant women who have not had reflexology treatments prior to pregnancy wait until week 16 before commencing treatment. Once the expectant mother has received approval from her primary care physician, reflexology can be administered on a regular basis. There is some evidence that there is less need for medical intervention when reflexology has been performed. In a 1992-1993 research project in England conducted by Doctors Gowri Motha, Jane McGrath and Ms. Zia Rowji, 64 pregnant women were offered reflexology therapy from 20 weeks gestation to term. Thirty-seven of the women completed the set course of 10 treatments and had outstanding results in labor and birth: The first time mothers and the 20-25 year olds averaged 5-6 hours in labor (the average is usually 16-24 hours). Second stage labor (pushing and birth), lasted an average of 16 minutes (the average is 1-2 hours). Some women had labor times of only 2 or 3 hours. Postnatal, the balancing, harmonizing, and restoring qualities of reflexology therapy are superb. Even if a woman has had a straight forward, uneventful labor, her entire system will appreciate balancing back to a non-pregnant state and, after all that hard work, a woman deserves a reflexology session!!
